  • Features integrated temperature and humidity sensor
  • Measures CO2 levels from 400 - 5000 ppm
  • Operates on the principle of infrared light absorption

The DFRobot Gravity: I2C SCD41 Infrared CO2 Sensor (400 - 5000 Ppm) is a crucial component in maintaining indoor air quality, as elevated levels of CO2 can negatively impact human cognitive performance and overall well-being. This sensor is founded on the SCD41 miniature CO2 sensor from Sensirion, utilizing the photoacoustic NDIR sensing principle in conjunction with Sensirion’s patented PAsens and CMOSens technology. This combination ensures unparalleled accuracy and a compact form factor.

The sensor is equipped with an integrated temperature and humidity sensor, which facilitates on-chip signal compensation. Additionally, it provides temperature and humidity data outputs. The SCD41 sensor operates by detecting the energy absorbed by CO2 molecules. When the infrared emitter is pulsed, CO2 molecules periodically absorb infrared light, causing additional molecular vibration and resulting in a pressure wave within the measurement chamber.

The concentration of CO2 is directly proportional to the amount of light absorbed; the higher the CO2 concentration, the more light is absorbed, and the greater the amplitude of the acoustic wave. This wave is measured by a microphone within the gas chamber, allowing for the calculation of the CO2 concentration.
